The North Carolina Coastal Reserve (NCCR) program began in 1989. Its mission is to protect North Carolina's unique coastal sites. NCCR is currently comprised of ten reserves. The coastal reserves act as living laboratories for research, education and management.

The UNC Coastal Studies Institute (CSI) is an inter-university research institute located on Roanoke Island in Manteo, NC. Formed in 2003, the Institute is focused on research, educational opportunities and outreach.
NC Sea Grant works with all public and private stakeholders to develop new research information that is then applied to coastal resource issues or opportunities. It is an inter-institutional program of the UNC System, is administered by NCSU, and receives funding from NOAA and the State of North Carolina. This is Sea Grant's northern coast extension office. The North Carolina Aquariums, of which there are three, were established in 1976 to promote awareness, understanding and conservation of North Carolina's marine and aquatic environments. Last year, more than 1 million people visited one of the North Carolina Aquariums.
Elizabeth City State University, located in northeast North Carolina on the Pasquotank River, offers degree programs in the marine sciences and is home to a Center of Excellence in Remote Sensing Education and Research.
